It's not solved. I'm using Mac 10.11.6 The screen shot shows the three versions available, but I only have one installed. As you can see, Bridge v 6.1.1.10 shows multiple versions of all the apps that can open a .jpg image. If I pick the one that is not already open, it opens a completely new version. It even appears on the dock as a completely new version (a second Pshop icon shows up in the dock, for example.) This multiverse only happens in Bridge. See attached MHBrown ... View more

Sorry, it turns out this does not work. For some inexplicable reason, you can't save as a PDF in the printer dialog box once you have it all set to the view you want. Apparently, all you can do is print it. That would be fine if it were 1987, but it's 30 years later and much of what I do is done electronically. Am I missing something simple? Thanks, for the tip, Bob, but I beg to differ. Opening PDFs in Illustrator in order to print enlarged sections is very much a recommended workflow. It has never failed to work and it is essential in printing very large architectural files where you only want to print a small part. PDFs are used to send drawings back and forth. Illustrator is not just used by print media designers and the workflow that is considered proper for that specific profession are not comprehensive across all other occupations. I feel that anything that works reliably can become part of a workflow. I've been using Illustrator to selectively enlarge and print specific areas of PDFs for quite some time with no damage. I can't see a compelling reason to stop when I have a large amount of empirical data that show it works just fine. ... View more

Thanks, Barb, but Adobe Acrobat doesn't allow you to print at an enlarged scale AND select the area you want to print. Of the applications in this "suite," Illustrator is the only one with a print dialog that allows this. As a "suite" of applications, they should all have the same print dialog box, but they do not. So there is no way to print out a section of an annotated PDF. That is disappointing. Since AI is the only app in this "suite" that allows selecting and enlarging a specific area I generally print my PDFs out of AI. Thank you for your help and yes, I'm sure they were done that way in Acrobat, but I can't imagine I'm the first person to want to open such a file In AI or place it in ID with those notes intact. I'm looking for a way to embed the notes so I can do that. The fact that they are stored on a separate layer should not make them invisible to the other members of the "suite." Whether i works 100 percent of the time for you and not 100 percent of the time for me doesn't matter. Two data points don't amount to much. As a designer I have to try to figure out what large numbers of people would do when confronted with something: a coffee maker, a car dashboard or software. All I'm saying in this case is that, in my opinion, if you took the time and expense to have a statistically significant sample of new InDesign users work with the program a majority of them would infer that off layers negate text wrapping. That is all I'm saying. It may not be possible to impliment this in an old piece of software, but I'm simply doing a thought experiment about it...at least at this point. Obviously what Joel says is absolutely true with the real world use of the software. You need to figure outs its quirks and rough spots. Derek is reiterating my point. That the default is backward. A person's intuition would suggest that turning off a layer would also defeat the text wrapping around objects on that layer. If you wanted the text to wrap around missing/invisible objects, then you could invoke it. This would eliminate Derek's problem without eliminating this "feature." Geez, I wasn't trying to make anyone angry, I just wanted to describe it accurately so you'd know what I was talking about. If everyone agrees that it is more helpful to have the default to wrap around invisible objects then fine. For me, I've never needed to do that. I've only used text wrap to wrap around visible images. I wasn't making a value judgement on your design. You need to find another business if you see personal attacks from a simple disinterested description of your work. Interesting, but why would you want the text to wrap when there is nothing there? It seems to be that the default should be that images on hidden layers automatically kill the text wrap. 99.999 percent of the time this is what you would want. I know it doesn't delete it, but it makes no sense that the text would still wrap around something that is not there. I cannot think of a single instance when I have wanted that to occur, going back to QXP ca1988. When would you want text to wrap around an object that is not visible? The text is wrapping around an image that is not visible, an image I'm not using on that page, an image that is on a different layer that is TURNED OFF.
